What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is an intimate female plastic surgery procedure designed to reshape and reduce the labia minora when they are excessively prominent, asymmetrical or responsible for aesthetic or functional discomfort.

Many women experience irritation during sport, intimacy or while wearing tight clothing. In other cases, patients seek labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons or simply to feel more comfortable and confident with their body.

Modern intimate surgery techniques allow natural-looking, discreet and harmonious results whilst preserving sensitivity and function.

When may labiaplasty be indicated?

Labiaplasty may be considered in cases of:

  • enlarged labia minora;
  • asymmetrical labia;
  • discomfort during exercise or daily activities;
  • irritation or pain during intimacy;
  • psychological distress or aesthetic embarrassment;
  • changes related to childbirth, ageing or hormonal variations.

Every patient presents unique anatomical features; therefore, treatment should always be tailored individually.

Specialist consultation and surgical planning

During the consultation, the surgeon carefully assesses:

  • genital anatomy and proportions;
  • tissue quality;
  • asymmetries;
  • the patient’s functional and aesthetic concerns.

Careful surgical planning is essential in order to preserve natural appearance, sensitivity and function.

Labiaplasty techniques

Several surgical techniques may be used depending on the patient’s anatomy.

Trim technique

This involves removing excess tissue along the labial edge, allowing precise reduction and contouring.

Wedge technique

This technique removes a central wedge of tissue whilst preserving the natural labial border.

Combined contouring procedures

In selected cases, reduction of the clitoral hood may also be performed to improve overall harmony and balance.

The aim is always to achieve elegant, natural and proportionate results whilst avoiding excessive tissue removal.

How is the procedure performed?

Labiaplasty is usually performed as a day-case procedure.

Depending on the individual case, surgery may be carried out:

  • under local anaesthesia with sedation;
  • or under general anaesthesia.

The procedure generally lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

Recovery after labiaplasty

Following surgery, mild swelling, temporary bruising and discomfort are common.

Recovery is usually relatively quick:

  • return to daily activities within a few days;
  • sport after approximately 3–4 weeks;
  • intimacy usually after 4–6 weeks.

Careful adherence to post-operative instructions is essential for optimal healing.

Scars and results

Incisions are carefully placed and generally become minimally visible over time.

Labiaplasty results are usually:

  • natural-looking;
  • harmonious;
  • long-lasting.

Many patients report improvements not only in appearance, but also in comfort, confidence and quality of life.

Why choose a specialist plastic surgeon?

Intimate surgery requires refined surgical technique, detailed anatomical knowledge and aesthetic sensitivity.

Choosing a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon helps:

  • preserve sensitivity and function;
  • minimise visible scarring;
  • achieve natural and balanced results;
  • personalise treatment according to each patient’s anatomy and expectations.
